An investigation into the potential of utilizing salvaged materials as the design stimulus for rebuilding a community post-disaster. The aim is to promote the use of reclaimed building materials as a strategy for retaining the identity of a place, whilst alleviating the pressure of waste disposal on the environment.

The REX House- case study
1920's house too damaged to be renovated, completely deconstructed, stored in shipping containers to be 100% reused in new house.

- steel components such as air conditioners, piping recycled into steel roofing
- lathe timber from old framing used as battens for rain screen
- materials (such as different coloured timber) reused in a way which celebrates their age and character, easily recognisable
- improvised design
- landscaping reused as furniture (trees felled on site, used as stools)
