An investigation into the potential of utilizing salvaged materials as the design stimulus for rebuilding a community post-disaster. The aim is to promote the use of reclaimed building materials as a strategy for retaining the identity of a place, whilst alleviating the pressure of waste disposal on the environment.

Some thoughts for me...

Just a dump of some thoughts i need to remember:

- inventory-driven design - where does this feature in my literature review?
- sashimono techniques
- upcycling versus downcycling - where does my reuse fit?

- new earthquake technologies for chch?
- amendments to building code for chch?
- building code research in general - what is influencing building material replacement and  obsolescence (double glazing etc)?

What am I proposing to design (just for my own clarification)

An inventory-driven design of a redistribution and (manufacturing?) centre which incorporates educational workshop facilities & conference rooms (to improve industry knowledge of sustainable techniques), gallery, materials storage, manufacturing workshop + supporting facilities (cafe/artist in residence?) which showcases the opportunities available when reusing building materials.
- A high-end style building which rethinks the reclaimed materials supply market shopping experience (the storage part)

- A building which shows different ways of using the same materials... from bespoke on-site design, to possibilities of prefab, more modular design.

- A building which is developed according to specific phases (i.e to mimic material availability)

That's about all i've worked out i want for now....

Some thoughts on the decision process for a designer
